I read somewhere that this probably occurred due to a Vista or Windows update. My sound was working fine until one day out of the blue, it stopped working and I have the little speaker icon with the red ‘X’ in the bottom toolbar.

Your computer will restart on its own during h; BIOS installation. I didn’t find the dv but that could be a line of the model and not the specific model. How satisfied are you with this response?
The outdated BIOS could certainly be the cause. If a sound card is listed, you have one installed.
